In my experience (uisng 16gb ram) it works as well as or better than any previous macbook I've had, and likely better than the macbook pro with any intel processor through 2021 based on very limited experience with a recent model (comparing the M1 macbook air to the more recent intel macbook pro). The best Mac alternative is Vectornator, which is free. Inkscape works fine on the M1 Macbook Air.

It is a very responsive fast little machine with no fan! Great so far. I have been playing with a new M1 MacBook Air and I must admit it is quite an experience. The same source code is used to compile both types of code, so Apple’s Arm and Intel machines are on exactly the same footing. I really wanted to work on a Mac for that fabulous 5k screen but to be honest the experience of using Inkscape on that machine is utterly horrible. I use Inkscape on a daily basis for my work and my files are usually pretty much heavy loaded with a lot of objects and text. UPDATE – On April 1st 2021 MacTex released the 2021 version of the software.
